P

eople will always
need places to
stay - and from
humble hostels
to the grandest
of hotels, those
establishments
need efficient,
reliable staff to keep operations running
smoothly and ensure guests are happy,
comfortable and keen to return.
Despite the uncertainty in the tourism
industry caused by Brexit, the hospitality
sector provides jobs for nearly 4.5 million
people in Britain. And if fewer European
workers remain after the UK leaves the
EU, there may be a shortage of staff, which
means now is the perfect time to enter
the industry and start building a career.
Whether you're ambitious to take on
a senior management role or are looking
for an entry-level job, there's something
for everyone in the hospitality industry.
Many people start at the bottom and
work their way up, but there are also
qualifications - from diploma courses
to degrees - that will give you skills and
knowledge you need to build a great
career. Apprenticeships and graduate
trainee schemes are also available.
Alternatively, if you're looking for
casual, seasonal or part-time work to fit

around studying or family commitments,
the hotel industry offers many
opportunities for flexible employment.
If you're interested in working
in the hospitality sector, here is a
sample of the many roles available.

Front-of-house manager
This is the person in a hotel who
supervises all staff who deal directly
with customers, including reception,
porters and concierges. The role includes
overseeing front-desk operations, setting
department objectives, evaluating
guest satisfaction and managing
budgets, policies and procedures.
You'll also recruit and train members
of staff. Shift work is common.
What skills and qualifications do
I need? A degree or diploma in hotel
management is an advantage, as is any
experience of front-of-house operations
in hotels, retail or other leisure sectors.
However, some people work their way up
from a position such as concierge. You'll
need good leadership, communication
and people-management skills, and
the ability to thrive under pressure.
Accounting and IT skills are also helpful.
How much can I earn? Salaries start
at £17,000, rising to £33,000 for an
experienced manager in a large hotel.

There are qualifications that
will give you the skills and
knowledge to build a career
