HOW CAN MANAGERS
ATTRACT THE BEST STAFF?
DIRECTOR OF MARKETING
ERNEST HUNTER GREEN:
Hiring the right people
is vital - your staff are key to your
business's success. You need to get
your proposition right: what can you
offer people that they don't get in their
current job? This doesn't have to be
about salary - don't underestimate the
power of a good working environment,
making employees feel valued and
flexible working options for a better
work/life balance. Then select the right
specialist recruitment agency. Don't
just go for the cheapest one - you get
what you pay for.
CAN A SMALL BUSINESS
MANAGE ITS OWN HR?
ANGELA: It is possible, but there are
many pitfalls to be aware of, including
drafting and issuing employment
documentation, job descriptions and
person specifications, and performance
and appraisal frameworks. Smallbusiness owners may struggle with
managing complex and sensitive
conduct issues, disciplinary, grievance
and appeal proceedings, long-term
absences and statutory requirements
such as maternity and paternity leave.
BUSINESS HAVE AN
LAURA: Absolutely. A handbook sets
out key policies, procedures, rules and
regulations, and gives employees a 'go
to' for those kinds of queries. We're
accredited by the Recruitment &
Employment Confederation, and it was
able to provide advice and guidance on
putting our handbook together.
WHERE CAN EMPLOYERS GO
FOR LOW-COST HR ADVICE?
ANGELA: There's a growing library
of online resources, including Acas
[acas.org.uk], Citizens Advice
[citizensadvice.org.uk] and the
government website [gov.uk], and trade
or professional associations often offer
access to employment advice. However,
some information is complex and not
understanding how the law applies can
lead to grievances and employment
tribunals, which are disruptive and
time-consuming, with severe financial
implications. Having a close working
relationship with an HR partner can
prevent issues escalating.
HOW CAN BUSINESS OWNERS
STAY UP-TO-DATE WITH
LAURA: The REC, or an accredited
member, can keep you informed of
changes. The Federation of Small
Businesses [fsb.org.uk] and the
Institute of Directors [iod.com] offer
access to lawyers.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS
OF OUTSOURCING HR?
SUE: You have access to senior levels
of HR experience at a fraction of the
cost of employing someone junior or
underqualified. It means someone else
does the time-consuming tasks you're
not an expert in, freeing up your time
to grow your business. An online or
cloud-based staff management system
will keep records, and can be managed
in-house but sourced externally.
A start-up can rarely afford an HR
director, and shouldn't attempt to do it
themselves. We've seen classic mistakes
such as duplicating a contract from a
friend and using it for a new employee,
giving them all sorts of unaffordable
rights. Concentrate on what you do
well, and outsource the rest. □
