insights into the business
world he has garnered
from working with more
than 250 businesses over
the last 16 years
What is the biggest challenge
faced by businesses today?
We live in an age where we have to make 30,000
decisions a day. As a small business owner, this
means we're flooded with noise from social
media. Our email inboxes fill up faster than we
can empty them. Everyone wants to sit down
and "have a coffee" with us. Family life is hectic.
We have too many Facebook notifications to
deal with, and we are filled with overwhelm.
With all that noise, is it any wonder we find
running a business stressful, taking up all our
time and not delivering all the money promised
to us when we started out? If you survive the
first three years, you've just about made it, right?
Why is there so much noise,
and what does it mean?
Twenty-five years ago there were 468,000
businesses registered in the UK. Now, there are
3.9 million. It's no coincidence that the world
wide web has just turned 25. In practical terms,
this means every marketplace is saturated by a
factor of 10, which means there's 10 times the
amount of competition.
Is it any wonder we find business hard when
we're competing with 10 times the number
of businesses - and not just locally? If you're
producing products, more than likely someone
in Asia is producing them cheaper. And if you
deliver a service, it's likely someone in India can
deliver that service for less money than you too.
How can business owners
overcome all the noise?
