huket, Thailand, is about more that
just 'that beach'. It's where the world's
finest professional and amateur
athletes often gather to train with some of the
best coaches in southern Asia. Regular guests
include Jenson Button, Maria Sharapova and
Olympic teams from all over the world, giving
Thanyapura the headiest of fitness nicknames,
'The Olympic Hotel'.
After a 14-hour flight to Phuket, a 20 minute
car ride gets you to Thanyapura. With a giant
golden Buddha at the main entrance to the car
park it seemed quiet. No sergeant major style
coaches running around yelling at groups of
sweat-drenched fitness fanatics.
'Whatever their discipline or level, it's vital
for any athlete to be in the right place mentally
as well as physically to perform at their best,'
says resort chief executive Chris McCormack.
'That's why we have a wellness centre offering
specialised treatments for sportspeople and

a sports science clinic as well as all the fitness
facilities. We give anyone with a passion for
sports a taste of what it's like being a pro-athlete.'
Here, amateurs can pick up tips on skills
and techniques in the morning, then, after a
specially prepared nutritious recovery breakfast,
can have a sports massage, some physiotherapy
or a mind-training class. 'The idea is to work
on the person as a whole, which is essential
whether they're competing just for fun or
representing their country,' explains Chris.

FACILITIES FOR ALL
Chris himself is no slouch, having previously
won the Ironman World Championship (one of
the toughest race events) not once, but twice,
in 2007 and 2010. He oversees Thanyapura's
facilities including two Olympic-sized
swimming pools, six tennis courts, several
mountain biking arenas and a monster athletics
track. Even the medical centre offers everything
