TRAINING

With so many routes to entry,
it can be confusing. Choose
a course that's accredited by
The Association for Nutrition.

COST

A three-year university degree
will set you back around £9,000
per year. Head to gov.uk to see
if you can get a student loan.

TIMELINE

Some courses claim to qualify
students quickly but if it's
credibility you're after, allow
three years for the degree and
another to gain experience.

ealthy eating Instagrammers, nutritionaltherapists with book deals, qualified dietitians and
celebrity nutritionists... a brief search on Google
and it quickly becomes apparent just how confusing the world
of nutrition can be.
Tens of thousands of people are currently practicing
as nutritionists in the UK and routes to entry range from
quick-fix courses to seven years' training and more, with
little regulation. So when it comes to carving out a career as a
nutritionist what's the best way to approach it?
As a rule of thumb it pays to play the long-game, but don't
underestimate the amount of time you'll need to dedicate to
learning and building up your clinical practice.
The good news is once you've passed you exams, the
options are plentiful. Roles range from working one-to-one
with clients in a clinic, to consulting for food and drink
brands - with the more accomplished nutritionists taking
home seven-figure salaries.
Lacking scientific smarts? Don't let that stop you. While
biological knowledge is crucial, you don't need to be a
professor - hard work and a willingness to learn will suffice.
A nutritionist's role is to help people make informed
decisions that will boost their health. While qualifications are
paramount, experience and personable qualities are equally
as important when you're looking to change people's lives.
For more information, visit the Association for Nutrition's
website (associationfornutrition.org). This should certainly
help you unravel all the various roles available within the
industry and decide which one to go for.

Daniel O'Shaughnessy, 32

'Nutritional Therapy
can be very rewarding,
especially when you
see a client come back
to the follow-up
session feeling better.
Building your business
can take time, but
don't feel pressured to
do what everyone else
is doing. Find your
niche and the work
will follow.'

Q.
A.

I've heard that in the
long term, it is better to
train as a dietitian. Is it?
Unlike nutritionists,
dietitians are legally allowed
to prescribe drugs and
advise on special diets for
medical conditions. As a
result, dietitians can work in
a greater number of roles,
especially in the NHS.

Q

. I'm already a qualified
nutritionist, but I'd like to
develop my skills. What
are my options?
The Association for
Nutrition endorses further
learning activities run by
other organisations, which
focus on developing the
skills and competence of
registered nutritionists.

'I think the main
hurdles working in
nutrition have been
trying to convince
people that food can
have a massive impact,
and re-assuring them
that nutritional therapy
is a science-based
approach rather than
being based on old
wives' tales.'

Q
A.

. I don't have a lot of
capital but would like to
work for myself. Can I?
Don't be put off by a
lack of funds. You could
always start as a mobile
nutritionist and visit clients
in their homes.
