Scandals about doping
and corruption pale into
insignificance when we
remember that, for two
weeks, more than 200 nations
across the globe set aside
their differences to meet
in the name of peaceful
competition at the Olympics.
Among the athletes this
year, a new team made
history as the first all-refugee
team to compete at the
Games. Marching as a symbol
of hope, the Refugee Olympic
Team carried the Olympic
flag before host nation Brazil
at the Opening Ceremony.
'We don't just tolerate
diversity,' says the President
of the International Olympic
Committee, Thomas Bach.
'We welcome it as an
enrichment to our unity. The
Olympic beacon lights our
way as a beacon of hope.'

WOMEN'S
RIGHTS
Thanks to a new women's
land rights policy in Odisha,
eastern India, single women
with an annual income of less
than £418 are to be given their
own plot of land.
This entitles thousands
of women to claim a small
plot of government-owned
land, which gives them
independence and security.
Traditionally, single or
widowed women are among
the most vulnerable in India.
Approximately 6,200
widows are set to be given
their own land titles after their
deceased husbands' names
were removed from deeds.

OCEAN
INNOVATION
With around eight million
metric tons of plastic waste
entering our oceans each
year, sea bins are set to be the
key to cleaner oceans.
Invented by Australian
surfers - alarmed by the
amount of plastic in our
waters - the Seabin is in the
final stages of development
and, all being well, should
be available in 17 countries
next year.
Fitted to pontoons, the
submerged bins will suck
rubbish from the surface of
the sea, to then be recycled.
And it's 100% safe for fish!
