BLUE LINE
For decades the earth's fragile
ozone layer has been thinning,
leading to increased exposure
to harmful ultraviolet radiation
- and the chemicals in
products such as hairspray
and fridges are to blame.
So how wonderful to learn
that, as the world is phasing
out deadly synthetic CFCs,
the ozone layer is healing,
with an area already half the
size of the US repaired.
'Aren't we humans
amazing?' says Professor
Susan Solomon of the
Massachusetts Institute.
'Collectively we agreed to
get rid of these molecules
and now we're seeing the
planet respond.'

Alcoholism and drug addiction
are notoriously difficult to
treat, and relapse is common.
But a new weapon has been
discovered in the fight against
addiction: helping others.
In research spanning a
decade, Maria Pagano at Case
Western Reserve University,
Ohio, has found that having
a supportive network and
helping others can decrease
social anxiety and increase
the chances of staying sober
by up to 50%. Caring for
others, therefore, has a special
role in recovery.
'It's a good way to get to
know people and a distraction
from inner angst that's often a
part of the recovery process,'
says Dr Pagano.

Supermarket giant Tesco has
revealed plans to work with
5,000 local charities across
the UK in an ambitious
move towards eradicating
food waste by the end of 2017.
In an innovative shift,
Tesco staff will be able to
collaborate with charities,
using digital platform
FareShare FoodCloud,
to distribute unsold items.
'We believe no food
that could be eaten should
be wasted,' says Tesco
chief executive Dave Lewis,
the inspirational driving
force behind tackling
the food surplus.

SANDS OF TIME
For 100,000 years posidonia
seagrass has grown in the
Med, oxygenating the water
and keeping it clear. However,
tourists in Menorca used to
complain that its fibrous
clumps were washing up
on the shoreline and spoiling
their sunbathing.
Not any more, because,
after all these millennia, it has
just been discovered that it's
these clumps that stop the
fine sand being blown away.
So, while islands that raked
away the clumps now need
to import sand from Saudi,
Menorca has retained its
own white beaches.
