T

he only place to buy clothes
in the village where I grew up
was also the local post office,
and the most exotic food available
was a tin of black olives. Then I
came to London, went shopping
mad, ate loads of different types of
olives, and had a great time. These
days, like most people, I want to be
sure people get paid fairly for their
work, and things haven't been flown
halfway around the world for my
benefit. The good news is there are
now loads of ethical options. And
finding them is a great way to get to
know the capital and have fun.
Food: I choose Fairtrade in
regular shops - look for the label
- and also love visiting markets
(less packaging and, thus, less
landfill, plus they often use local
suppliers, so less fuel used). Check
out allotment sales and organic
produce delivery, and shop locally.
Clothes: If you're buying new, there
are lots of fabulous ethical shops,
with high street stores getting in on
the act with sustainable lines. If you
like a bit of vintage (I do) buy 'preloved' items for less environmental
damage and a look unique to you.
