Hotel Vestibul
Palace, Split

CITY ESCAPE

Sundial and tower
in People's
Square, Split

Dubrovnik may be the town many
first think of when they consider
Croatia but Split, the country's
second-largest city (after capital
Zagreb), is a seafront gem
combining cultural heritage with
secluded beaches and just the right
balance of tradition and modernity.
Base yourself at the Hotel
Vestibul Palace (vestibulpalace.
com), a chic hideaway located in
Diocletian's Palace, a historic setting
in the pedestrian-only old town. It is
part of Stories, a collection of
16 luxury boutique hotels around
Croatia each with its own character.
The old town is Split's historical
heart. Meander through its marble
streets, where characterful little
Croatian cafes and boutique shops
jostle for space as music drifts
through the air. Among these is the
highly-regarded Bokeria
Peristil is the main square of
the Old Town, with the beautifully
ornate Cathedral of Saint Domnius.
It dates back to the 7th century,
making it the oldest working Catholic
cathedral in the world.
Bacˇvice beach is only a 15-minute
stroll from town, or there are
boat trips from the Riva - Split's
waterfront promenade - to the
neighbouring islands of Solta, Brac
and Hvar.

WELL GOOD

Derelict for
a decade,
Obonjan is now
host to an annual
wellness
festival.
▲ HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Croatia's climate and landscape make it ideal for an active
trip. How about cycling through the hill towns of Istria, sailing
around the Šibenik archipelago in Dalmatia or windsurfing
in Pelješac? There are also plenty of tour operators offering
more adventurous day trips from bigger cities, such as rock
climbing on and around the Marjan peninsula in Split.
A 40-minute ferry trip from Šibenik, Obonjan is a previously
uninhabited island that's now a cross between an all-summer
festival and a wellness retreat. Just 1.5km long, it can only take
500 guests, so you can always find a quiet corner to relax and
immerse yourself in nature (obonjan-island.com).
What sets this unique offering apart is the quality of the
visiting practitioners, from London-based yogis to European
meditation teachers, and the range of massage, talks, therapy
and so on available. Booking options are flexible - you can stay
the night or settle in for a longer stay. Prices this season began
at €32.50 per person per night. For next year's prices, keep an
eye on the website.
Known as the 'island of vitality', Mali
Obonjan -
Lošinj is ideal for anyone looking
festival fun
for rejuvenation. The island
offers heart-soothing views of
deep green seas. Veli Lošinj
is an old fishing settlement
with gorgeous bays, perfect
for a restorative dip.
