that truly

Sandwiched between the coast
and the Central European
countries of Slovenia, Serbia,
Hungary, Montenegro and Bosnia
and Herzegovina, Croatia has a
distinctive range of food. On
one hand, there's the seafooddominated cuisine of the
Mediterranean; on the other,
the hearty strudel and Mlinci (a
delicious type of pasta) partnering
roast turkey, goose or duck.

garlic and wine. The clean salty
water means it's so tasty you'll eat
the lot. Seasoned only with olive oil
and herbs grown a stone's throw
from your plate, the fish is delicious
in its freshness, and usually
accompanied by blitva, a spinachlike plant indigenous to Dalmatia,
and boiled potatoes.
Ingredients are seasonal. Bite
into ripe green figs at the end of
summer, juicy pomegranates in
autumn and tangerines in winter.
Sharing food and drink plays a
big part in Croatian culture, and
simple home cooking features
in family-run taverns. Croatia is
becoming increasingly healthconscious, too, catering for
those who are following raw,
vegan and macrobiotic diets.

Croatia's picture perfect islands are arguably its biggest
draw. From the party hotspot of Pag and jetsetters' favourite
Hvar to the tranquil islands of Mljet, Šolta and Dugi Otok
there's something for everyone.
Fringed by fishing villages and forested with fig and cypress
trees, Zlarin is a haven for nature lovers. The scent of rosemary
hangs in the air as you wander around this three-square mile
island, one of the few on the Adriatic Sea not to allow cars.
Meanwhile, Vis is a bohemian getaway with white pebble
coves, towering cliffs and seafront Venetian houses. A
former naval base, it was out-of-bounds to tourists until
1989 and retains a sleepy air. Now it's the place to come for
authenticity, nature, foodie delights - and peace and quiet.
Located in the northern part of Dalmatia, the Kornati
Islands - there are more than 140 of them - are a rugged
archipelago. Back in 1980, the 89 southernmost islands, islets
and reefs were declared a national park, protecting them and
their marine surroundings. There are no permanent residents
and the best way to visit is a day trip from Zadar, Šibenik or
Split. You could even stay in one of the island's cottages
- which have no electricity or running water. See croatia.hr.
