It's likely you take steps to look after
yourself mentally and physically
- possibly, even spiritually. But I'd wager
there's still at least one thing in your life
you'd like to change. Perhaps you want
to work out more, launch that great
business idea, eat more organic food or
volunteer regularly? But... you probably
won't get around to doing it. Before you
think I'm being pessimistic, let me explain; habits take time to form and,
despite what any self-help guru may say, there's no magic wand solution.
Research proves the old adage that it takes 21 days to form a new habit is
actually a myth. A study published by the European Journal of Social
Psychology found, on average, it takes 66 days for a new behaviour to become
automatic. Rather than let this deter you, I sincerely hope it empowers you to
keep going, even if you fall off the bandwagon.
Focusing on one small step at a time helps, but willpower needs to be underpinned
by insight. It's harder to sustain anything in life without bringing awareness to
what lies beneath the surface, symptom or void.
September brings with it a sense of new beginnings - let's make it count.
