AGE OF HOPE
The saying 'you're only as
old as you feel' is often
bandied around, but it seems
it might actually be true.
The Irish Longitudinal
Study on Ageing (TILDA) has
been collecting data on
over-50s in Ireland for 10
years and has found that
people with a positive outlook
on ageing were better able to
cope with life than those
who viewed getting older
as a negative thing.
The study also found the
more positive a person's
outlook, the better their
general health, or as TILDA's
Professor Rose Anne
Kenny puts it: 'The data is
nothing but heartening - life
gets better as you get older.'

OF STRANGERS
Over the last decade, more
than 500 people have
donated a kidney during
their lifetime to save a
stranger's life. According to
NHS data, altruistic kidney
donations make up 8% of the
total - the other donors offer
one to a friend or family
member. A healthy person
can live a normal life with
just one kidney.
John Forsythe, associate
medical director for organ
donation and transplantation,
says: 'These are spontaneous
and voluntary offers of
donation, motivated by
a decision to do something
good for someone in need.'

BEATING
ADDICTION

Alcoholism and drug addiction
are notoriously difficult to
treat, and relapse is common.
But a new weapon has been
discovered in the fight against
addiction: supporting others.
In research spanning a
decade, Dr Maria Pagano,
associate professor of child
psychiatry at Case Western
Reserve University, Ohio,
has found that having a
supportive network and
helping other people can
decrease social anxiety and
increase the chances of
staying sober by up to 50%.
'It's a good way to get to
know people and a distraction
from inner angst, which is
often a part of the recovery
process,' says Dr Pagano.

CITY OF WOMEN
The six-decade conflict in
Colombia is affecting women
disproportionately, many of
whom have been subjected to
sexual violence or had their
children taken away.
But survivors of the war
have banded together to form
a community known as the
Liga de Mujeres Desplazadas
(League of Displaced Women),
thanks to international
funding secured by lawyer
and founder of the Liga,
Patricia Guerrero.
Based in the northern
region of Bolivar, the Liga
has created a safe haven
for hundreds and now
has 102 houses.
