Stress. It's my go-to response when life
throws a curveball. On a physiological
basis, there's not much I can do about that:
the body's in-built fight-or-flight response
is there to protect us all. The trouble is, I've
become a pro at hitting curveballs and
whatever crap comes my way.
Like any unhealthy habit or
attachment, stress can become a crutch.
In his brilliant book Recovery, Balance's cover star Russell
Brand addresses our age of addiction. Even if we don't admit it, most of us are
hooked on something - be it our phones, exercise, sugar. Or in my case, stress.
When stress becomes a way of life, it's time to step back, challenge unhelpful
thoughts and behaviours, and exercise choice. I'm starting with learning to say
'No' (and taking up kickboxing).
It's Mental Health Awareness Week (14 - 20 May) and this year's theme is one
of the biggest drivers behind the rise in mental heath illnesses - stress. Modern
life lends itself nicely to burnout. It's taken me a long time to speak up about
my love-hate relationship with stress, so don't underestimate how stressed that
person who doesn't talk about it might be feeling.
