A BIT ABOUT ME
After the release of my debut album
Wanted on Voyage in 2014, I had a
phenomenal two years touring the
world. I had a top 10 hit (Budapest)
in 11 countries and loved the high
of performing. But once I got home
I lost my sense of purpose. I had
regular dreams where I would step
on stage and forget every word, or
sing out of tune. Eventually I
realised I was experiencing anxiety.
Since then I've been trying to find
new ways to help me feel calmer and
more in control.
TIPS TO
CALM
SWITCH IT OFF
After a week turning
your phone off each
night, you'll look
forward to it and may
even do it earlier.
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
I no longer put pressure on myself to
be a particular way. When I first
told my dad, he said: 'Everyone has
every right to feel every emotion
under the sun. You're not a villain
for feeling the way that you do'.
TALK TALK
Find people you can
be honest with about
your anxiety. It will
really lessen the load.
RUN WITH IT
For the first time in my life, I have
committed to exercise. I go out for
half an hour jogs a few days a week
to clear my head. When I run, I
don't listen to music or podcasts.
I just focus on the sound of my own
breath and the sounds of the world
around me.
NOURISH
YOUR BODY
Cooking has become
a saving grace - it
really relaxes me.
BREATHE
TECH SAVVY
I now leave my phone downstairs
when I go to bed and leave it on
airplane mode until 9am to ensure
I get morning 'me time'. All of us
are guilty of being slaves to our own
made-up office hours - we finish
work and then carry on working.
CALM YOURSELF
I recently got the Headspace
meditation app. Some blokes
skim over the word meditation
thinking it's 'not for me; that's for
somebody burning a joss stick' but
meditation's about switching off
and there's no shame in affording
yourself the time to stop and think
about nothing in particular.

SOCIAL SKILLS
I love social media but when I
hang up my boots, I won't be using
Twitter or Instagram. Yes, it's
an amazing way of sharing your
thoughts and experiences but
people put too much pressure on
themselves to be seen to be living
a certain way through what they
post. My advice is simple: follow
the people you love and unfollow
anyone and everyone who makes
you feel bad about the quality
of your own life. B
George's new album Staying At
Tamara's is out on 23 March. A
tour is sold out, but he's back
for more UK shows in June.

AIR MAX
Get some fresh air,
even if that means
walking somewhere
for no reason at all.
The outcome
Keeping busy helps keep anxiety at bay. When I lost
structure to my life, I should have offered to help out
at my local shop. Everyone is different, though, and
other people with anxiety might benefit from being less
busy. Take stock of what you really need for yourself.
AS TOLD TO GEMMA CALVERT; PHOTOGRAPHY: PHIL SMITHIES
Try 7/11 breathing
- in for seven, then
out for 11. It naturally
slows the heart rate.
