Romesh Ranganathan on
keeping a cool, comic head in
an increasingly frantic world
The Crawley comedian, recently back from
filming a show for Showtime in the US,
currently has a sitcom, adventure show,
documentary, panel shows, podcast and
more bubbling away, while being one of the
funniest comedians in the UK. We caught up
with Romesh to find out how he does it...

HOW DO YOU FIT EVERYTHING IN?
'Some people make the mistake of working
away so much they become surplus to
requirements at home. I've engineered a
situation where I'm a hindrance. When I am
at home, the family have to adjust to me
being around. I went with my wife to drop
the kids off at an after-school class and the
woman working at the coffee shop said: 'It's
much easier when you're not around,' which
I took to mean that my wife is banging the
owner of Maidenbower Cafe. In truth, I have
a very understanding wife who values a
revenue stream from the work I do more
than having her husband around. I'm lucky.'

Rom appeared on The Late Late
Show with James Corden in
November, and nearly forgot his
set: 'I thought, "I can't actually
remember any stand up..."'

HOW WAS THE US?
'I grew up watching US comedy, so the
opportunity to go there was exciting, once
you push the insecurity to the back of your
head. I was followed by a documentary crew
in my attempts to make inroads there.
Sunshine and being outdoors more improves
mood; however, the friendliness in Los
Angeles is unacceptable. I prefer Britain
where strangers try to avoid eye contact.'
WHEN WILL YOU RETURN TO TOURING?
'I'm writing a new show at the moment. It's
early days, but I am looking to take it out
on the road next year. I've missed touring.
Nothing beats the loneliness of eating a
Subway sandwich in bed at your hotel,
watching The Sopranos on a laptop and trying
to ignore the fact that your eating habits on
tour have given you moobs. It's a hell of a life.'
