According to Peter, fly
fishermen and women will tell each
other what the fish are biting, 'not
like carp fishermen' who (as far as
I can discern), spend a fortune on
equipment, drink too much beer and
are a shifty bunch. I get the feeling
fishing is a tribal sport.
There is a buzz to hooking a fish,
but I have to admit to a rush of guilt
when the one I hooked reached the
bank and flailed about until Peter
hit it on the head. Dead. An ex-trout.
I hadn't prepared myself for that
which, in hindsight, was pretty dumb.
The NHS recommends eating at
least two portions of fish a week and
oily fish, like salmon and trout, are
particularly good for you. They're
tasty too. So, arriving home with my
catch after the day's fishing, the best
bit was still to come. B

ly fishing is inherently
tranquil. You sit around for
hours staring at the end of
your line hoping for a bite. Blissful.
Then, occasionally, you catch a fish,
cook it and eat it. Job done.
I went for a lesson at Thornwood
Springs fisheries in Essex. Built,
owned and run by Peter Thurston,
there are three man-made lakes filled
with trout. Peter provides all the kit,
so all that's needed is wellies, a hat
and a pair of sunnies to protect
we fishermen from the potential
perils of flying fish hooks.
The hook has a bit of fluff ('a fly') to
lure the fish into biting. It's not rocket
science. Flies come in hundreds of
shapes, sizes and colours though, so
there is an art in figuring out what
insect the fish are eating and what fly
will best imitate it.
