good news

without the
fluffy stuff

Considering all that's going on in the UK and overseas, solidarity, altruism
and positivity have never been more important, writes James Gill

LET LOVE RULE
There is no positive take
on the horrors of the terror
attacks in Manchester,
London, or indeed any other
place in the world. Our love
and thoughts go out to
everyone affected. However,
it's heartening to see that
British discernment, spirit
and humour prevail, even
when some in the media are
intent on exacerbating fear.
The message from the
people is clear: let love rule.
Defiant Londoners took
to social media to challenge
said fearmongering, while
the man photographed
holding on to his beer as he
fled London Bridge was a
symbol of our unwavering
resolve. And we weren't the
only ones who wanted to
vote for Ariana Grande in
the General Election...

THE EYES
HAVE IT
A researcher at Oxford
University has successfully
developed a synthetic softtissue retina. Traditionally,
much stiffer materials are
used, so this news could
prove a huge breakthrough
for visually impaired people.
Previously, some retinal
implants were metal (yikes!).
So how old is this
researcher? Surely they
were drawing on years of
experience to achieve this.
Actually, Vanessa RestrepoSchild is just 24 years old.
She explains: 'I wanted to
prove that technology could
be used to replicate human
tissue, without actually using
living cells.' The Balance
team looks back at what they
were doing when they were
24 and sigh wistfully.

BORING
VENTURE

FA MILY

If you're a fan of US sitcom
Silicon Valley, then it's almost
impossible to read about Elon
Musk's latest venture without
thinking of the tech-based
hit. That's because the Tesla
CEO has created a tunnelling
machine as part of new
venture The Boring Company.
It's the sort of wild scheme
that character Gavin Belson
would approve.
The plan is to dig a
network of tunnels under
Los Angeles, so people can
be transported at speeds of
up to 500mph (yes, really).
Elon even took to social
media to find a name for
the machine and it seems
he likes 'Snoop Dug'. The
initiative aims to improve
traffic and, if successful,
could prove the end of jams.

'Ethel' might seem like an
old-fashioned name, but it's
about to be dragged into
the 21st century, thanks
to Northern Ireland
entrepreneur Deepak
Samson and his start-up
Connected Care Solutions.
That's because Ethel is the
name of a new elderly care
smart hub that allows
families and carers to stay in
touch with an older person
via an easy-to-use tablet.
If you're panicking that
your nan will hear the word
'tablet' and try to swig it
down with a cup of tea,
rest assured. It has been
designed for those unused to
technology, helping them
to contact family, take their
medication and much more.
