It is widely felt retirement
can be, frankly, a death
sentence. With no proper
structure in place to bring
meaning, many pensioners
seem to pass away not long
after giving up work. But
before you burst into tears,
a new survey reveals that
more pensioners seem to
be embracing and enjoying
retirement. The survey,
carried out by Prudential,
found almost 90% say
retirement has met their
expectations, or they're
happy with how it has
turned out, while 26% of
pensioners who retired
in the past 10 years say
they're fitter and healthier
since leaving work. Kirsty
Anderson, a retirement
expert at Prudential, said:
'Over the past 10 years we've
studied the finances, plans
and aspirations of people as
they reach retirement, so it's
really good to find out that
for many people retirement
has provided them with a
new lease of life.'

Sport and the environment
haven't always been the
best of bedfellows. Think of
the toxic fumes and carbon
footprint of, say, Formula
One or the water needed
for golf courses (reportedly
4 billion gallons a day).
However, one small British
firm, GRN Sportswear, is
doing its bit to redress the
balance by turning plastic
bottles into sportswear.
Once the bottles are
cleaned and broken down
they are extruded into an
innovative yarn which is
then knitted into a light,
breathable fabric which
feels soft against your skin,
dries quickly - all in all
a perfect fabric for high
performance jerseys. What's
more, Bristol-based GRN
uses bamboo in all T-shirts,
adding: 'It's lovely and soft
to wear and a natural
anti-bacterial fabric.'

The late poet Philip Larkin
was on to something when
he wrote This Be The Verse
in 1971. 'They f**k you up,
your mum and dad. They
may not mean to, but they
do...' Now new research
has backed up the former
Hull resident with proof
that being good parents
has a profound impact.
Research, spearheaded by
Elizabeth Shirtcliff of Iowa
State University, shows
that positive parenting has
a happy knock-on effect
for offspring. Hundreds of
Seattle teens were asked
questions to ascertain how
close they were to their
parents. Then, five years
later, saliva samples were
given to monitor cortisol
levels; those with positive
parental relations had an
increase in cortisol, which
helps govern stressors,
blood pressure and new
information. Once the kids
are asleep, assume it's
safe to argue again.

PERIOD OF CHANGE
Despite it being 2018, talk
of 'periods' can cause
embarrassment. Good
news comes in the form of
the Betty Bus, brainchild
of Hayley Allerton, an
education facilitator, actress
and presenter - which is
touring schools to have
children speaking freely and
confidently about periods.
A Betty spokesperson says:
'We have found the Betty
Bus has been a fantastic
asset to help break down
the embarrassment factor
girls can have when talking
about periods and have
inspired hundreds of open
discussions with girls of all
ages. By the time the girls
leave the bus, they are often
heard shouting 'PERIODS'
loudly and confidently while
exiting down the bright
yellow slide!' If you're on a
train reading this, we dare
you to shout 'PERIODS!' B
