It may only be a few days
old, but already 2018 is
looking promising on the
good medical news front.
Take this, for example:
Diabetes UK reports the
interim results of a fiveyear DiRECT (Diabetes
Remission Clinical Trial)
study which suggest a
very low calorie diet is
hugely beneficial for Type 2
diabetes sufferers. The study
found a close link between
Type 2 remission (where
blood sugar levels are back
in the normal range for 12
months without medication)
and weight loss: 86% of
people who lost more than
15kg on the programme were
in remission after a year, as
were 57% of those who lost
10 to 15kg, and 34% who lost
5 to 10kg. In the comparison
group, where people had the
best diabetes care, but didn't
try the new approach, only
4% went into remission.

for pure goosebumps,
Matthew McConaughey's
Oscar acceptance speech
from 2014 is a belter. 'It
is a scientific fact,' said
the Texan, 'that gratitude
reciprocates.' And it seems
he was on to something.
Dr Robert A Emmons, a
professor of psychology at
the University of California,
continues to do pioneering
work on the benefits of
practicing gratitude and
says clinical trials show
it 'lowers blood pressure,
improves immune function
and facilitates more
efficient sleep'. Want to

SWEET CHARITY
Whether it's your mum
trying to get to grips with
a VHS recorder in the 80s,
or you throwing away 'that'
pair of jeans, we all need
to change with the times.
Charities are getting in on
the act so they're better
equipped for the big, brave
new digital world. It's why
social design charity Swift
has been working with
charities and funders to
develop technology that's
used for social good. That
means developing apps
for social purposes and
helping to ensure the
grant-making process is
more efficient. The report
says: 'While there are a
number of opportunities
to access early stage social
innovation funding, to
come up with an initial idea
and develop and test it, it
is far more challenging to
access the level and type
of funding needed to move
through the middle stages
of development.'

EAT YOUR VEGGIES
You don't need to be
Columbo to come to the
conclusion: if you're a
regular reader of Balance,
you're probably a relatively
healthy eater. So what we're
about to tell you smacks of
shooting ethically sourced
fish in a barrel handmade from organic oak.
Eating well, according to
research from universities
in Holland, is also good
for the planet. The reports
found that if 28 highincome countries followed
the dietary requirement
recommended by their
respective governments,
greenhouse gases related
to food production would
decrease by 13-25%, while
the land required to
produce said food would fall
by 17%. The report reads:
'It might just be possible to
have your cake and eat it!'
Maybe give the cake a
swerve and have a salad.
