he word 'Bath' evokes thoughts
of warmth, relaxation and blissful
escapism. You can see how the
place got its name - I've just
got back from a few days there and feel
thoroughly rejuvenated.
As my wife and I pulled into Bath Spa
station, I found it hard to believe that it's
just 90 minutes from London. But, thanks
to the GWR train from Paddington, that's
the case. It makes Bath ideal for a weekend
or midweek break, or something longer.
Bath has been a spa town for centuries;
it's one of the original wellness destinations,
named after its natural spring waters. When
the might of the Roman army needed a
rest, this was the place. The Roman army,
however, didn't get to stay at beautiful
boutique hotel, No 15 Great Pulteney,
where the rooms are pleasingly quirky.
After catching up with an old friend
called sleep, we made our way to the
natural thermal waters of Thermae Bath
Spa, which is perfect to feel refreshed. The
following day we wiled away a few hours at
the Grade I listed Holburne Museum to add
to the feeling of pure escapism. It's full of
paintings, ceramics and jewellery collected
on Grand Tours of Europe.

parts of the Kennet and Avon Canal, which
we would never have found without the
bikes. Vegetarians are also well-catered
for. If looking for plant-based food, the
Acorn Vegetarian Kitchen, on North Parade
Passage, boasts a superb menu.

ONE VISIT NOT ENOUGH
Bath feels like a small town enveloped
by lush countryside. Rare is the street
view that doesn't have rolling hills in the
background. Half an hour's walk from our
hotel, we were wandering the grounds of
Prior Park Landscape Garden, a National
Trust property with stunning vistas, lush
foliage and 18th century graffiti.
Pardon the smugness but we managed
to squeeze in a 5K run and were
certainly glad we did. It was a great
way to see Bath's sumptuous
architecture such as the Royal
Crescent, the Circus and the
nearby Botanical Gardens.
You can understand why
Bath is the UK's number one
wellbeing destination. We're
already planning a return trip.
