COULD LITERALLY
BE LIFE SAVERS
'DISASTER ALERT'
It won't tell you when you're
about to walk into a disaster
relationship, but it will let you
know about possible floods,
earthquakes, volcanoes, storms
and other natural disasters.

'RED PANIC BUTTON'

Fiona Hutchison, 31, UX designer, says: 'I
work in digital marketing so a lot of the time
I'm on my phone figuring out if stuff works. I
never used to check people's Instagram
stories but do have to sometimes as part of
my job so have found myself doing this
more and more. Other than work I tend to
spend around three hours a day on my
phone. When I don't have my phone, I do
have this sense of anxiety. It's half a feeling
of freedom, but also panic.'
Ally Shields, 28, Recruitment
Consultant, says: 'I reckon I'm
on my phone about seven hours
a day. I use it a lot for work and
this doesn't stop when I get
home. I use my phone as my
alarm so picking it up in the
morning has become routine.
I'll check my emails straight
away. My partner is always
telling me to get off my phone.'

Evie Johnstone, 28,
Photographer, says: 'I reckon
maybe three hours a day are
spent on my phone, but I do
make a conscious effort to use
it less. Being on my phone
annoys me and I get frustrated
if I find myself endlessly
scrolling. It's awful, but i do
find myself feeling anxious
when I don't have it close by.
However, I've just been to
Mexico with no wi-fi for three
weeks and it was amazing to
completely switch off.'

Wish you had an instant way of
letting friends or family know
you need help? This is the app
for that. Hit it and they'll
instantly know where you are.

'SAFETREK'
Going somewhere slightly dodgy?
With this app you have to press a
button for a certain amount of
time - if you let go (and don't
enter the deactivation code in
time) the police are alerted.

'FAMILY LOCATOR'
Want to know where the kids
are? Or the old folks? This app
will do that for you. Check it out
at any time and a map will show
you exactly where they are.

'SAVE A LIFE'
If someone has a cardiac arrest,
you could save their life with a
defibrillator. This app will tell you
where the nearest publicly
accessible one is, thus improving
their chances of survival.
Thomas Loosli, 29, Bar
Manager, says: 'I'm on my
phone roughly one or two
hours a day. I tend to use my
laptop to watch videos
instead. I'm definitely guilty
of being on a night out and
being sucked into my phone.
The first thing I do when I
wake up is to look at it. I
spend a few minutes in bed
looking up what's going on in
the world. I definitely feel
anxious without it.'

'PET FIRST AID'
While many people know first
aid for humans, far fewer know
how to give a dog mouth to
mouth. This app will help with
that. And it's via the nose, not
the mouth, incidentally.
All apps available on iOS and
Android operating systems.
They're free, some on a trial
basis, but there may be in-app
purchases or subsequent fees.
