Rosamund Pike and Sam Riley sizzle in the fascinating Marie Curie biopic Radioactive

W

hen Oliver Cromwell was being painted by Sir Peter
Lely in 1653, he asked that he be depicted "warts and
all", rather than appear so flattering and sycophantic to
render the whole operation pointless. And so proves the case with
Radioactive, the rollicking and unflinching biopic of Marie Curie.
Not only was she one of the most remarkable minds of all time, but
someone who endured an exceptional life.
After all, this is someone who won two Nobel prizes (Marie was
the first woman to land the coveted award and first person to win
two) and would drive on to the battlefields of World War One with
an X-ray machine to help the injured.

The always-excellent Rosamund Pike brilliantly captures this
spiky and uncompromising streak. Marie was a scientist who
initially refused to collaborate and whose vision was so singleminded that the notion of working with someone was unthinkable.
That, of course, would change once she met Pierre (a terrific Sam
Riley); they would discover radium and polonium. Theirs was a
profound love and Pierre had no interest in smoothing off Marie's
edges. The on-screen chemistry between the two is, fittingly,
memorable, and passion is at the heart of Marjane Satrapi's film.
