HEAVEN'S GATES
Bill Gates is back. The billionaire is
behind Heliogen, a solar energy
company that harnesses the
power of the sun to provide
fossil-free energy. Gates says:
"Industrial processes like those
used to make cement and steel
are responsible for more than a
fifth of all emissions. If we're going
to get to zero carbon emissions,
we have a lot of inventing to do."

ACTION SATISFACTION
Liberal Democrat leader Jo
Swinson may feel miffed having
been left out of a recent televised
debate, but she does talk some
sense. As Ms Swinson tells
BALANCE: "Wellbeing is so
important to our economy, but for
too long it has been overlooked in
favour of other measures. GDP
isn't the only measure of success
for how happy people are, so I
want the Government to pay
greater attention to other

MIND OVER MONEY
It's no secret that time in nature is
good for wellbeing. Now research
carried out at Griffith University
in Australia has worked out a
value, saying it saves more than
£3 trillion globally in health costs.
Around 20,000 Australians were
interviewed about their mental
health and the time they spent in
nature. Study author Ralf Buckley
believes the global value could
be higher, and says: "You can
scale up by population, by GDP
or by the number of park visits"

A BIT OF ALL WHITE
Listen to white noise to get to
sleep? According to studies carried
out at the University of Basel, the
introduction of white noise
improved the brain's ability to
distinguish between subtle tone
differences. Professor Dr. Tania
Rinaldi Barkat says: "We found
that less overlap occurred between
populations of neurons during two
separate tone representations.
Thus the overall reduction in
neuronal activity produced a more
distinct tone representation"
