MEET THE EXPERT
Mr Zaid Awad,
PhD, FRCS
(ORL-HNS),
MFSTEd, DOHNS,
is a Consultant
Otolaryngologist
and head and neck
surgeon at Imperial
College Healthcare
and developed an interest in surgical
technology very early in his career.
After completing his training in the UK, he
went to Australia to further advance his
skills and to seek training in using surgical
robots, lasers and image guidance
systems. He brought these skills to the
UK to treat patients with ENT conditions
and offer an alternative to old fashion and
conventional treatments.

ar, nose and throat surgery is
a very delicate specialty, which
relies on detailed knowledge of
anatomy, advanced surgical skill,
but also on high-precision technology
and advanced operative equipment.
Nowadays surgeons have access to
state-of-the-art technology that enables
them to access previously inaccessible
parts of the head and neck and treat
complex conditions. Tumours can be
removed with a great deal of precision
with very little or no collateral damage
to normal surrounding structures.

In sinus surgery:

High resolution Computed Tomography
(CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging
(MRI) scans combined with intraoperative real-time surgical navigation
systems mean that the risks of surgery
are dramatically reduced. It also means
that small abnormalities within the
nose, sinuses, base of skull or even
inside the skull can be accessed
and removed through the nose

benign and cancerous lumps on the
vocal cords measured in millimetres,
with no damage to normal tissue, and
patients can eat, drink and speak
normally on the same day. Small cancers
are treated without the need
to undergo prolonged treatment with
radiotherapy, which can cause life-long
dryness and swallowing difficulties.

In throat surgery:

Highly sensitive PET scans can identify
small cancers at a very early stage when
they are not visible to the naked eye or
on conventional scans. Surgical robots
driven by trained surgeons can access
and remove these small tumours
without the need for open surgery.
Recent studies have shown very high
cure rates with reduced hospital stays
and faster return to work and normal
throat function.
