BABY'S FIRST YEAR
can trust your baby to feed according
to their own appetite, which can be
unpredictable in the early weeks and
may even change from day to day. Your
baby will show you signs when they need
milk, their alertness may increase and
they might use head movements, mouth
movements and hand waving.
As they get older, formula feeds will
get further apart and most babies start
to sleep without waking for a feed.

A convenient choice for feeding when
away from home is to use ready-mixed
formula. However, if you have to use
infant formula you'll need to measure
out your powder in advance, take along
a vacuum flask of hot water that has just
been boiled and then, when your little
one needs feeding, mix it all in an empty,
sterilised bottle there and then.

HOW TO GET IT RIGHT
✦ KEEP IT FRESH A feed
should always be made fresh,
but if you absolutely have
to pre-make it, keep it in the
back of the fridge for no
more than 24 hours.
✦ RELAX Make sure you and
your baby are comfortable
and spend time enjoying
the closeness that bottle
feeding gives you.
✦ FIND YOUR ANGLE The
crook of your arm is the
perfect place and angle for
your baby to feed. As long
as your baby is halfway
between sitting and lying
they should feed just fine.
✦ KEEP OUT THE AIR Make
sure the bottle isn't held
horizontally and, also, that the
teat is full of milk.
✦ TOOTH WARNING Teeth
will start to come through
your baby's gums from the
age of about six months.
Check the teats regularly, as
little teeth can damage them.

There are a lot of options for bottles and
teats, and which you choose is down to
personal preference. Teats are made from
either silicone or latex, and babies tend to
prefer one or the other. There's no great
difference between them.
Some feeding bottles, however, have
shapes or patterns that make them hard
to clean. As hygiene is so important for
your baby, make sure you choose a bottle
that is easy to wash and sterilise.
