VINTAGE VIBES
The same is true of some of the larger
items, such as the chest of drawers, which
hubby had in his bedroom when he was
growing up. It made a nice project for
me to work on while Jem took care of
some of the bigger jobs. After sanding
and rubbing it down with wire wool,
I simply replaced the drawer knobs and
added some new wooden feet to elevate
it to changing table height - and the old
dresser was transformed. All in all, it
took a day, and it made a useful as well
as sentimental addition to the room.
Another fun, quick and cheap project
that kept me busy for an afternoon was
framing. I love having pictures and
mirrors on the walls - our house is
covered with them, and the baby's room
would be no exception.
A friend of ours, an artist, sent us a
gorgeous collection of prints inspired
by the natural world, all in various bold
colours. We framed three pairs of blue,
green and brown prints and hung them
above the cot to create a focal point.
Another fabulous find was a collection
of 100 postcards of Puffin children's book

covers. Bright, colourful and quirky,
Jem and I spent an evening just looking
through them all, reminiscing over the
books we used to read when we were
little and picking out our favourites to
frame and hang on the walls.
We introduced some new pieces
too, such as the nursing chair (an eBay
find), the bookshelves and the floor
lamp. As the weekends and evenings
passed, the room came together like
clockwork, taking on a lovely calm
feeling in the process.

MAKING OUR MARK
For Jem and I as a couple, having
personal items around is something that
has always been important. Books that
our parents and grandparents read to us
as little ones soon filled the shelves, along
with teddy bears who comforted us to
sleep once upon a time.
Of course, everyone is different. For
lovers of the contemporary look, there
are plenty of gorgeous, individual and
eco-friendly baby and child brands out
there, such as &me, Ferm Living and
Fabelab. Or if you're a crafty soul,
Pinterest is an absolute goldmine of
unique ideas to take your nursery
makeover to the next level.

With that in mind, anything we could
upcycle or recycle, we did. Many of
the little decorative pieces, such as the
Winnie the Pooh pictures and badgebedecked swimming trunks, are mine
and my husband's from our childhoods.
