Choosing your The endless design possibilities and show-stopping styles have led to a carpet revolution in recent months. A new carpet can change a room’s whole look, not to mention the choice of fabrics and furniture. The same basic rules apply to carpet colours as to those for soft furnishings – light carpet will make a room look bigger while dark colours will make your room look smaller but will mask dirt. a pattern does add visual interest to the floor, but remember to think carefully about the room in question before getting too bold! If you are mixing patterned carpet with pattern on walls or soft furnishings, ensure that both have one common colour so that you get a harmonious overall look. | SLUG| carpet Cushion it Decent underlay can make a carpet feel ultra luxurious A thick underlay reduces noise and improves insulation. This is used to cushion the ooring boards, increase their durability and provide sound insulation. There are several di erent grades, ranging from thin sheets of closed-cell polythene foam, costing from £1 per square metre, to felt underlay with a silver foil layer, costing around £6 per square metre. Sarah says... ‘Carpet is cool again. I’ve always thought carpets were a smart move. A good quality tted carpet with a decent underlay provides fantastic insulation against cold air from the ground.’ Bold colours or patterned designs? PLAIN CARPET is timeless and will suit any room or decorating style. It gives you greater flexibility with wallpaper and fabrics and is easy to build schemes around – both now and in the future. A plain style carpet also opens up a room, and using the same colour throughout the house, either upstairs or downstairs, gives a feeling of space and linkage between rooms. If you want a surface texture, such as the popular ‘natural look’ that replicates coir and sisal, then it has to be plain carpet. PATTERNED CARPET is, however, staging a comeback with fashionled designs that really do make the floor a focal point. On a practical level, it can also hide a multitude of sins. Whether a contemporary design, classic floral or small motif, NEUTRAL SHADES are also easy to build schemes around. A plain, natural colour is clean and simple but neutral shades do tend to show stains and marks. Nontraditionalists like to blend these passive shades with bright wallpaper and soft furnishings. Those who want to be calm without being dull, cool but not cold, use soft neutrals, gentle greens and natural shades, particularly where you want to give a feeling of space. Warm, earthy colours that are fiery and passionate create a sense of luxurious intimacy and are well suited to large rooms and those that are north facing. TEXTURES add a different dimension to carpet, creating depth of colour and a pattern in themselves. Loop-pile carpets that emulate fashionable floor coverings are still going strong. ✱ Contemporary and modern MAY 2011 | 227
