‘I love my new kitchen’
This outdated kitchen was transformed into a luxury, modern space for entertaining with panoramic garden views
When Dena Barnes moved into her West Dulwich home with her husband Jeremy, three children and two step-children, she knew one thing and that was that the old kitchen had to go. Unlike most new homeowners she didn’t want to opt for a simple trip to Ikea or Magnet. Dena scoured the internet, looking for an architect who also had the interior design flair to entirely remodel the back of her house. The kitchen, situated in an existing extension, lacked the light that Dena wanted, though she also had concerns as to how her young children could play safely while she made dinner.

Letting in the light
‘One of the reasons I wanted to open it up was that there was almost a blind spot in the old kitchen,’ she says. ‘Although we had four patio doors, we just had the normal kitchen window over the sink. We also have foxes in the neighbourhood and that was a big worry initially. We now have a whole panoramic view of the garden.’ The final bill for the project, which was designed by London-based architects, RDA, came in at over £200,000. But Dena is more than happy with what she paid for, stating that it has transformed the way that the house is used, especially since the days are longer and the evenings warmer. >
