AT YOUR GARDEN
'If your garden is small,
consider planting against
the house and using it as a
backdrop,' says guest editor
Sarah Beeny. 'In a small front
garden, a single specimen tree
makes an attractive focal point.'

PAVE THE WAY
Lawn maintenance is one of the most
time-consuming tasks in the garden,
so you may prefer to replace your
grass with an alternative. This might
mean turning the area over to gravel,
paving, decking or bark.
Sarah says: 'The key is to use hard
surfaces, such as decking and paving,
instead of grass, so you don't have to
worry about weeds.'
Although paving and decking
require occasional cleaning and
maintenance, they are much easier
to look after than keeping on top of
cutting the grass.
Paving - whether block or slab
- can add character to your outside
area and keeps it neat and tidy. Paler
varieties will help to brighten up a
garden, reflecting the light to create
a sleek finish. Darker paving stones,
slate or granite will absorb light,
which will emphasise the colour of
the foliage and flowers.
Natural stone paving is both low
maintenance and hard-wearing.
Rustic paving looks good weathered,
while modern slabs need to look
pristine. An easy way to achieve this
is to have it pressure washed - or hire
a pressure washer to do it yourself - a
couple of times a year.
Resin-bound paving is durable and
porous - ideal for reducing problems
such as flooding caused by surface
water. It provides a range of safety
and maintenance benefits, including
minimising the risk of slipping (it is
non-slip) and tripping (there are no
loose stones), and the growth of weeds.
It is long-lasting and easy to clean,
often only needing periodic power
washing to keep it looking good.
