Usually used for decorative purposes,
accent lighting highlights a particular
feature or item, such as ceiling beams,
ornaments on a shelf or a picture. This
gives texture, focus and shape to general
lighting, with extra depth and shade.
Examples include tracks, table lamps,
halogen, downlighters, uplighters and
spotlights. Among the things you may
choose to highlight are:
BOOKS Clip a spotlight on to the
underside of the shelf or alternatively put
wall washers into the ceiling.
PICTURES AND PAINTINGS To
avoid glare and give an even distribution of
light, use an eyeball light that can swivel,
and set it to flood (a broad beam).
You could also mount an adjustable
spotlight on a ceiling track and direct it
at a focal point in the painting.
PLANTS If it's a large pot plant and likes
sunlight, put an uplighter or a spotlight
recessed into the floor behind it. The light
will bounce off the floor and ceiling and
diffuse back into the plant foliage to create
lovely and unusual shadows.

Window treatments often absorb
your precious natural light.
Removing heavy or dark curtains
will instantly transform dark rooms.
Light colours and lightweight
fabrics all help to improve the
amount of natural light getting into
your rooms. For small windows, use
sheer or light fabrics to naturally
brighten your home.
If privacy is an issue, consider
shutters. They control the amount
of natural light coming in and also
protect your privacy.
Wood shutters tend to be the
more expensive option, while metal
and plastic ones are cheaper - but
they still do a good job.

Technology progresses rapidly - you can now adjust and personalise your home's illumination to
match your needs at different times of the day, such as waking up to 'dawn' rather than an alarm
clock. Always use energy efficient bulbs where possible - LEDs are best - yes, they're a little more
expensive and let off a brighter light than incandescent bulbs, but you'll save a lot of money over
time and will reduce your carbon footprint.
