{PITCH CAMP} SIENNA MILLER Celeb camping fans SIENNA MILLER Rumour has it that the glamorous but sometimes dishevelled looking Sienna, 29, took a Portaloo to Glastonbury Festival last year, so she didn’t have to slum it with the great unwashed (literally). However she tolerates the basic conditions, Sienna always makes camping look chic with her short shorts, long tanned legs and brightly coloured wellies. Whether she chooses to camp anywhere else but festivals is not well documented, but she’s helped to bring glamour into the camping world. Celeb caravan fans MARK OWEN Take That singer Mark, 39, used to go on camping holidays as a kid and fondly remembers a Wales holiday in the coastal town of Tenby. ‘We used to go camping there and I remember break-dancing at a club. I’d love to go back and relive those memories.’ Now, though, he’s taken to caravanning with his two children Elwood, five and Willow, three and is a fully paid up member of The Caravan Club. JODIE KIDD Quoted in the hit book series Cool Camping (Punk Publishing), Jodie, 32, said ‘It [the book series] shows just how stylish outdoor life can be’ and this inveterate traveller is a big fan of camping it seems. Her favourite place to stay is a campsite, but not as most of us know them. Jack’s Camp in Botswana is the ultimate in luxury in the middle of the Kalahari desert with a wildlife safari inches away. Not exactly a wet weekend in a windswept British hillside, this place may well have spawned the phrase ‘glamping’. JAMIE OLIVER The TV chef, 36, spent thousands of pounds converting a 1950s Volkswagen Samba campervan into a modern mobile home complete, of course, with a cutting-edge kitchen. He drove it around southern Europe for his television series Jamie’s Italy a couple of years ago and when he toured the UK to promote a new book, he chose to travel in the caravanette, which he modi ed with a 2.4-litre Porsche engine, to give it a fuel injected boost. It was fitted with satellite navigation, a PlayStation, two TVs and a high-spec audio system and had a cream interior with Cath Kidston curtains, no less. PATSY PALMER Her family have always had caravans, and now it’s something Patsy, 39, loves to do with her own kids. She gave birth to son Bertie late last year and has three other older children. ‘The reason I carry on doing it is that the children absolutely love it. If you get a good campsite, then it’s just heaven for them. They get a bit of freedom, there are often great activities laid on, and it’s great for them to mix with and get to know other kids.’ BEN FOGLE Despite being a lover of the extreme, television presenter Ben, 37, enjoys the simplicity of camping holidays in the UK. ‘I think people are realising that camping is a fun and cheap alternative to overseas holidays’, he says. Ben’s a big fan of the outdoors and now he has one son Ludo, aged one and another baby on the way (due May this year), maybe camping will be higher on his agenda. SARAH BEENY The property developer and at home regular expert, Sarah Beeny, 39, used to go camping with her parents as a child and now regularly takes her four boys. ‘Nothing beats a simple camping holiday in the UK with my husband and small boys. Camping is all about making your own res and kebabs and lying back and looking at the stars. Pembrokeshire in Wales is a favourite.’ HELEN MIRREN The classy actress, 65, who elegantly defies the ageing process, may be able to put her youthful looks down to a spot of caravanning. A member of The Caravan Club, Dame Helen is a big fan of the outdoors and loves nothing better than taking to the roads with her home in tow.
