technology for anterior
cruciate ligament (ACL)
reconstruction. The Orthopilot
system, which was developed by
German company, BBraun Aesculap,
has been successfully used at the clinic
since 2005 and the results have been
favourably received at international
conferences from Boston to London.

The knee is a complicated joint, making
successful ACL reconstruction surgery pretty
challenging. Computer-aided surgery employs
highly precise triangulation with infrared
trackers, similar in many ways to a satellite
navigation system. Information from these
trackers is displayed, in real time, during
the operation on a computer screen.
At the start of the procedure, the computer
system makes precise measurements of all the
important features of the patient's knee. This

A keen athlete, James completed the
London-Paris triathlon just 15 months

instability, due to the torn cruciate ligament, to
be taken. The ACL graft is then specifically
placed to produce a bespoke reconstruction
for that individual knee. Finally, the stability
of the knee is verified and recorded by the
computer and, at the end, the patient receives
a record of these measurements showing what
their knee was like before and after surgery.
