Keeping it
under wraps?
What are the common sexual conditions that, out of embarrassment and fear, sufferers ignore at their cost?

eorge Orwell once famously
said: 'At 50, everyone has the
face he deserves.' Sadly, as
they mature into middle age,
some people become silent sufferers
of many unavoidable and distressing
problems, no matter how well-behaved
they've been throughout their lives.

'Many of these problems are also seen in
younger men who are often scared to seek
prompt advice for a fear of what may follow,'
says consultant urologist Sudhanshu Chitale
(pictured above). The following list of conditions
and symptoms is by no means exhaustive but it
does depict some of the most common conditions
that could be troubling a man of any age...
*Testicular or scrotal lump sets off a fear that
this may be evidence of testicular cancer
*Prostate problems that cause urinary frequency,
poor stream, urgency, incomplete bladder
emptying, terminal dribbling and getting up to
pass urine at night, instill fear of prostate cancer
*Testicular pain and prostatitis (inﬂammation
of the prostate gland) interfere with daily
activities, embarrassing the sufferer
*Erectile dysfunction inevitably leads to low
self-esteem - and unnecessary shame
*Ejaculatory dysfunction brings dissatisfaction
with sex life in the false belief that it's incurable
*Low testosterone results in low libido and
then waning interest in sexual intercourse
*Bent penis/Peyronie's disease makes for
a poor body image and a compromised, and
possibly inhibited, quality of sex life
*Foreskin related problems with possible
tearing or bleeding and often severe pain
- sufferer is afraid of possible circumcision
*Burning or stinging while urinating is usually
due to infection - the man fears it's serious

Surprising statistics

The number of men who suffer from at least one
of these conditions at some stage in their life is
staggering. Unfortunately, only a small minority
feel able to share their concerns with their
loved ones, let alone seek advice from health
professionals. Most people underestimate
how isolating it is to suffer alone, but those
who are going through it know all too well.

pressures placed upon them in today's society,
men frequently allow their own health to take
a backseat. This attitude must change.
Studies have shown that early intervention
can lead to a more favourable outcome for
several of these conditions. Some, of course,
may not follow a known course and others
will be connected to a problem elsewhere in
the body; but being able to discuss concerns
openly and in conﬁdence with a health
professional is the ﬁrst step towards gaining the
support and reassurance every man deserves.
Doctors accept that there are some matters
in a man's life that should remain private.
But where private parts are concerned,
keeping quiet for too long can result in more
psychological and physical distress than
anyone should ever have to cope with.
So, gentlemen: stop pushing your worries
back into your trousers and take a brave step
towards gaining control of your own bodies
- and take this step together with your GP
or specialist urologist. The good news is that
most of these genital conditions are treatable.
