At Home with Sarah Beeny 2013 - (Page 96)

weekend of it WITH EASTER HOLIDAYS JUST AROUND THE CORNER, TURN YOUR HAND TO SOME DIY AND TRANSFORM YOUR HOME – ONE ROOM AT A TIME T ime may be short, but that doesn’t mean your home has to fall into disrepair (despite the fact that 20% of British men would rather let that happen than indulge in a spot of DIY). The weekend – or a Bank Holiday – is the perfect opportunity to spruce up your home, but be pragmatic and set your sights on a single room. You won’t be able to tackle an entire house in this time – so don’t even try! A home update needn’t be an interior overhaul, either: moving around your furniture, or installing new lights, can make a dramatic difference (and requires a lot less elbow grease, too!). 1 FRAME YOUR WINDOWS Many people assume that window dressing is very limited: curtains or nothing, but this isn’t the case. As well as traditional curtains, blinds are an ideal – and quick – way to give your windows a new lease of life. For 2013, the roller blind is likely to prove a popular window adornment, with its versatile array of colours and patterns. To really embrace this year’s spring/summer décor styles, opt for a neutral tone and a textured or slubbed weave with an organic feel. Combine with a delicate floral element in the upholstery, and accompany with black accessories – another on-trend feature – cushions, vases, and wall hangings, to take your room of choice from bland to chic in just a weekend. It really is that simple. ‘Rather than just slapping paint on everywhere, decorate one room really well. Decorating is 80% preparation and 20% painting, so take your time and make a good job of it, and get the finish as perfect as you possibly can.’ WORDS: Jessie Bland| THIS PAGE PHOTOGRAPH: Courtesy of Dunelm Mill | PHOTOGRAPHS: Getty Images Make a Sarah says... 096 | APRIL 2013 96-100 Do up a room in weekend FINAL.indd 96 28/2/13 11:33:27
