Island life The Channel Islands are just a short ride across the English Channel, perfect if you don’t like ying, and o er a wealth of fascinating places to see and things to do Guernsey Capi al: St Pe er Port FAMOUS FOR: the Guernsey Jumper. Traditionally worn by seamen, the Guernsey originally had styles so distinctive that people could tell a seafarer’s origin by the pattern of his jumper. Nowadays the pattern is standardised but highly distinctive as the sturdy, hardwearing jumper it is. Guernsey o ers a bit of everything: a relaxed, slow pace of life (the island’s speed limit for cars is 35mph; 15mph in the Ruettes Tranquilles network of country lanes where priority is given to walkers, cyclists and horse riders) mixed with a bustling, vibrant capital; beautiful beaches and coves, stunning coastal and cli walks, great shopping and fabulous places to eat, all serving fresh, local produce. For sh lovers, it’s heaven – fresh sh caught in the morning and on your plate by lunchtime. Guernsey is only 24 square miles, so it is perfectly possible to explore all its beauty, history and character in just a short holiday. France, this is believed to be the world’s smallest chapel. Its interior centrepiece altar is a marvel – work began on it in 1914 and it can only be described as a labour of love. Decorated with seashells, pebbles and colourful pieces of broken china, the altar really is a sight worth seeing. CASTLE CORNET this ancient fort overlooks the harbour of St Peter Port. The fort is linked with every major event of Guernsey’s history, including the Hundred Years War with France in 1338 and the German occupation of the island between 1940 and 1945. Inside the castle, there are ve museums, all telling stories of the fort, the island and its people. And each midday, the Noon Day Gun is red. Above: The historical Castle Cornet in Guernsey Below: Stunning Beauport Bay, Jersey Jersey Capi al: St Helier FAMOUS FOR: the iconic – not to mention delicious – Jersey Royal potato, discovered in 1878 by Hugh de la Haye, whose home, a traditional stone farmhouse, is still on the island. At 45 square miles, Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands. It’s said to have the best sunshine record in the British Isles and is a lively mix of French and British culture. English is spoken, but all the street names are in French – after all, it’s only 14 miles from the French coast. Like Guernsey, Jersey’s appropriately named ‘Green Lanes’ give priority to walkers, with a vehicle speed limit of 15mph. Take a leisurely stroll around the island and you’ll be sure to see some of its most famous inhabitants – the soft-eyed, chestnut-coloured Jersey cows! For beaches, St Brelade’s Bay and Portelet Bay are two of the best in the UK, both blessed with soft, golden sand. Get lost in the network of secret staircases and discover specially commissioned artwork that tells the castle’s story. Children will love trying to nd the medieval ‘urine wheel’, hidden high up in the turrets!
