Make sure that the lock on the bathroom door can be opened from the outside To prevent slipping, buy a rubber mat for your shower or bath. They’re not expensive and are one of the simplest ways of preventing accidents in the bathroom. 1 Safe haven MAKING YOUR BATHROOM DANGER FREE AND FIT FOR ELDERLY RELATIVES OR YOUNG CHILDREN IN YOUR HOME IS PARAMOUNT PREVENTING DANGER YOU MAY THINK that the assortment of hot appliances in a kitchen would make it the most hazardous room in the house. However, if you have very young or elderly people in your home, the bathroom can also present a danger. While special adaptions can be made to help keep the bathroom safe for all ages, there are simple changes that will help, too. And, it goes without saying that common sense goes a long way to keeping kids safe at bath time. ST YLISH LIVING It’s not just the elderly who may have difﬁculty getting in and out of the bath. Even in middle age we may feel those muscles creak occasionally! Grab bars on either side of the bath can make the process safer as can one set higher up on the wall. 2 3 A shower seat which attaches to the wall can be useful for elderly people who may ﬁnd it difﬁcult to stand while showering. These specially designed seats are non-slip and much safer than just placing a plastic chair into a shower, which can be disastrous. Bathroom taps come in all styles, shapes and sizes, but if elderly relatives are beginning to lose strength in their hands or suffer with arthritis, it’s sensible to install either large, easy to turn taps, or taps that you simply push to one side to turn on. Young children are as much at risk of accident in the bathroom as the elderly. Here are some points to bear in mind: ● Never leave your toddler or young child unattended in the bathroom. Hot water, cleaning uids, medicines, or a slippery oor can all be hazards if a child is left alone. ● Never ever leave your child alone in the bath, they could slip under the water. ● Always check the water temperature before your child gets into the bath. ● Keep all medicines and chemicals out of reach. Ideally, place a lock on the bathroom cabinet and keep all cleaning uids safely locked away, too. ● Ensure that your shower door is made from safety glass or heavy-duty plastic and that children know never to swing on it! 4 The bathroom ﬂoor can be the biggest hazard of all as it can become slippery when wet. To be really safe, put down a carpet that is water- and stain-resistant. If this is too costly an option or too much upheaval, make sure that you put down a rug with a rubber backing so that it doesn’t slide across the ﬂoor. 5 32
