Get back into S haping up after your baby has come into the world will help you feel like things are ﬁnally getting back to normal. However, putting pressure on yourself to do so while taking care of your newborn and family will just add to your stress. Don’t expect to jump straight back into a vigorous workout routine. Instead, focus on eating healthily and getting as much rest as you can. That said, walking is a great form of exercise that you can begin as soon as you’re up to it – particularly if you take your baby out, too. SHAPE IT TAKES TIME You’ve been pregnant for nine months. Realistically, this means you should give yourself at least that long for your body to get back to normal. You may feel things are moving too slowly, but be patient and you’ll soon see results. If you’ve recently given birth, it’s natural to be carrying some extra weight. Our tips and moves will help you return to your former glory before you know it! ‘It takes an average of six weeks after a natural birth, and 12 weeks after a Caesarean, for your GP to sign you off for exercise,’ says ﬁtness trainer, Anouska Annan (www.justmeﬁtness.com). ‘After this time, your body should be ready to undertake a light, gradual programme.’ Some changes to your body are pretty permanent – stretch marks, for example, although these do fade over time. However, with a little work, sagging tummy muscles can be tightened up, as can your pelvic ﬂoor – the muscles that support your bladder, vagina, rectum and uterus. The key is to start gently, gradually building up the intensity and amount of exercise before getting into a routine. Most new mothers wait until after their six-week postpartum check-up before working up a sweat.
