IT'S TIME... TO RELAX T his time of year can get extremely hectic; balancing work life with social activities, ofﬁce parties, and Christmas shopping - not to mention the change in weather - can all take a toll on your body. Which is why it's essential that you make some time for yourself, and take the chance to relax, in order to keep your mind and body in tip-top condition. Here are some techniques to help you achieve just that. Go it alone Just ﬁve minutes spent on your own can recharge your body and calm your mind. Take ﬁve to 10 minutes each day to sit quietly and concentrate on your breathing. Find out what really comforts you If you regularly turn to food for consolation when you're stressed out, the chances are that you won't really get the comfort you seek. 'This is because food only provides xclusive 88 | E a shadow comfort,' says US life coach Jennifer Louden (www.jenniferlouden. com). 'Shadow comforts can leave you more depleted and guilty or depressed over time because they distract rather than soothe you.' So, before you binge on a bag of Maltesers or a huge block of cheese, think about how it will make you feel. Will you be more energised, relaxed or clear-headed? If not, think about what will help you feel that way. One way to do this is to make a list of all the things that you ﬁnd comforting when you're feeling good. Keep your list nearby so that you can refer to it when you're having a bad day; that way you'll know the comforts you're choosing are truly soothing. Healthy ideas include reading a good book. Visualise Try to picture a blue bubble stretched protectively around your entire body. The colour blue is linked to both tranquility and protection and will help to stop your energy from being leached by those around you.
