Think cocker spaniels and poodles. Combine them, and what do you get? The somewhat amusing-sounding cockapoo. Cute, fluffy; a harmless mish-mash. But other combinations can be lethal. Take two health conditions: diabetes and bulimia. Diabetes, the condition where the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood is too high because your body can't use it properly. Bulimia, medically known as bulimia nervosa, where sufferers attempt to control their weight by severely restricting the amount of food they eat, then binge-eating and purging, or using laxatives, in order to rid the food from their body. Two highly complex conditions in their own right. But combined? Known as diabulimia - although not yet a recognised medical term by the NHS - this is when people with diabetes deliberately skip their daily insulin injections in order to lose weight. People with this problem have a belief that insulin makes them fat. Diabetes UK (www.diabetes.org.uk) refers to diabulimia as a 'phenomenon' - but, despite its increasing prevalence, it is yet to be classed as a condition. Also referred to as 'disordered eating behaviour' (DEB), the term 'diabulimia' was actually created by the media - television, newspapers and magazines who all conjured up a term to explain this alarming, potentially fatal trend. Regarded by the majority of health professionals as a mental health issue and an eating disorder, the charity Diabetics With Eating Disorders (DWED, www.dwed.org.uk), that works with people with diabulimia, state that around 40% of 15- to 30-year-olds regularly omit to give themselves their insulin.
