| PROMOTION| The key to saving lives Internationally renowned consultant urologist, Mr Manu Nair, is at the forefront of the prostate cancer battle, using innovative ultrasound and nerve sparing surgery over radiotherapy to minimise side effects Around 40,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year and it is thought of as being the most common male cancer. While radiotherapy is the usual treatment for this particular type of cancer, a Birminghambased urologist has started to use an new, improved treatment which does not require surgery and comes with fewer side effects. Mr Manu Nair, (pictured, above) is a consultant urologist and his main practices are at Spire Parkway Hospital in Solihull and BMI Priory in Birmingham. He is an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Birmingham and lead clinician for laparoscopic surgery at the Heart of England Hospital. ‘MR NAIR’S EXPERTISE HAS SAVED MY LIFE’ Mr Manu Nair helped businessman, David Butler get his prostate back to full health When David Butler, a prominent local figure from Sutton Coldfield, who is also the district governor of the Rotary Club, needed immediate treatment from a prostate specialist, he sought out Mr Nair’s services. Mr Nair used treatment to shrank Mr Butler’s prostate and then used the ‘da Vinci robot’ to complete the surgery. This is a minimally-invasive, yet effective, method which allows surgeons to perform the surgery through a few tiny incisions with precision and control. It can offer potential benefits such as low blood loss, quicker return to bowel function, quicker return to diet and shorter hospital stay. ‘Manu Nair saved my life, and in my opinion, he is without doubt the best prostate surgeon in the UK,’ says Mr Butler. ‘PROSTATE CANCER IS THE SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN MEN – EVERY HOUR, ONE MAN DIES OF THIS PREVENTABLE CANCER’ Specialist treatment Mr Nair’s mission is to prevent deaths from prostate cancer. ‘It is the second leading cause of death in men – every hour one man dies of this preventable cancer. One third of men can have no symptoms at all which is why it is called the silent killer disease, but there are risk factors which need to be carefully monitored,’ says Mr Nair. ‘Caucasian and Afro-Caribbean races are more at risk than others. Ageing also increases the risk of developing it. But the most significant risk, as always in cancer, is having some kind of hereditary predisposition or link.’ Mr Nair founded Minimal Access Prostate Service (MAPS) which uses advanced diagnostics such as the Urine PCA-3 test, MRI and 3D prostate mapping biopsies. The latter can help provide a precise diagnosis of most hidden cancers but Mr Nair also uses keyhole or knifeless surgery to treat the disease. Innovative technology Mr Nair uses cutting edge and state-of-the-art techniques of Hifu, keyhole and robotic surgery as part of bespoke treatment for individual treatment plans. He is one of the high volume surgeons in the country and has a busy private practice with referrals from all over the UK and abroad. Mr Nair also performs Greenlight Laser surgery which is particularly effective in treating the symptoms of an enlarged benign prostate. It can help with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) which is when the nodules in the prostate are large enough to compress the urethral canal. Mr Nair uses this innovative technique as it is a minimally-invasive procedure but comes with fewer side effects than traditional treatments. It can shorten periods of catheterisation, and can also allow for quicker recovery. High-powered lasers destroy surplus prostate tissue without harming other healthy tissue, so an enlarged prostate that is blocking the bladder, can be opened up. The laser vaporises excess tissue using safe and precise energy pulses.
