Step up to it W 1 BUNIONS Our feet are probably the most neglected part of our body, but it is important to look after them to avoid common health problems e demand a lot from our poor feet. We expect them to keep us upright all day, get us from A to B… and how do we thank them? By shoving them into uncomfortable shoes, smothering them in thick socks for half the year, then giving them a once-over just as summer arrives. But our feet deserve more respect. With 26 bones and a complex array of muscles and tendons, they need plenty of TLC to keep them healthy. Here is a rundown of the most common foot problems, and what you can do to treat them… One of the most common disorders affecting the feet, hallux valgus (bunion) is a bony swelling at the base of the big toe. It develops when the big toe starts to move at an angle towards the second toe, causing pain. The skin over the bump can become red or infected. WHAT CAUSES THEM? It is not known exactly why bunions occur, but badly fitting shoes are thought to be a cause. This is because narrow and high-heeled shoes can put strain on the bones and muscles in your foot, pushing toes together and forcing the big toe to point at an angle towards the others. However, as bunions also develop in people who don’t wear shoes at all, this is not the sole reason. Bunions can be hereditary, and are also associated with diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. They affect up to a third more women than men. WHAT CAN I DO? Wearing the right shoes, using inserts and taking medication, including painkillers and anti-inflammatories, can ease symptoms. But these won’t change the shape of your foot. Only an operation can correct it. The exact procedure will vary depending on the type and size of the bunion. Initially, a surgeon will make a cut on the inside of your foot over your big toe joint and may shave off the bone sticking out. The foot bone, ligaments and tendons in your foot may then be repositioned. WHAT CAUSES IT? Flat or high-arched feet, traumatic injuries (either direct or gained over time through overuse) and other conditions such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and neuromuscular conditions can make a person more likely to develop hammer toes. Ill-fitting shoes can also cause the problem because they place a lot of pressure on joints. WHAT CAN I DO? Firstly, footwear advice must be adhered to so the toes do not have unnecessary pressure on them. Splints or tapes can then be used to try and correct the toe and padding may help to take pressure off. Corticosteroid injections are sometimes used to ease pain and inflammation. Braces may also be prescribed to push down on the toes and force them to stretch out their muscles. If these methods do not work, surgery may be needed. These are small, painful warts on the sole of the foot and are particularly prevalent in children. They are slightly raised and circular in shape, with a thickened rim of surrounding skin that looks like a callous. The HEALTH TIP: surface may have black dots. BEFORE BED WHAT CAUSES THEM? A virus SLATHER FEET that can be spread through direct WITH CREAM contact or from being barefoot AND PUT ON SOCKS in an infected area. Verrucas can spread to other people, although this is more common when the skin is wet, such as in swimming pools. WHAT CAN I DO? Treatment is designed to help your own body to fight the infection, and this can be done by simply covering verrucas with a plaster and waiting for it to disappear. More likely to work are weak acids such as Bazuka gel or Salactol, or freezing treatments such as liquid nitrogen, or laser therapy. | HAPPY FEET| 3 VERRUCAS WORDS: Kia Hansen | PHOTOGRAPH: Getty Images 2 types of toe abnormalities, namely hammer toes, claw toes, mallet toes and trigger toes. A hammer toe is when a partial or complete dislocation of one of the joints occurs in a toe. This can cause the whole base of the toe to point upward and the end of the toe to point down. As it continues to be deformed, it will press up against the shoe and may cause corns. HAMMER TOE There are four main 4 small round patches of hard skin, often on the toes. Callouses are larger, often on the soles of the feet. Both become sore to stand on or touch. WHAT CAUSES THEM? Friction or pressure on the foot, often because of tight shoes. Runners are also prone because of extra pressure on the soles of the feet. WHAT CAN I DO? Apply moisturising cream daily for hard or seed corns, although professional removal is best. Corn plasters or paints are not recommended as they can cause damage to surrounding tissues and rarely resolve the problem. ✱ CORNS/CALLOUSES Corns form MARCH 2012 | 143
