ou might be forgiven for
thinking the gym is most
frequently visited by fit
people in their 20s. But
you'd be wrong. According
to gym chain Nuffield Health, it's the
septuagenarians who make the most
visits, with 72-year-olds leading the
field, going twice a week.
But if you're one of those who has
yet to discover the joys of regular
exercise, it can seem a little daunting.
Boxercise, Zumba - what are they?
And isn't joining a gym expensive?
Well, firstly, you don't need to join a
gym. It's often possible simply to turn
up and pay as you go. Leisure centres
often run weekly classes, too. As for
which exercises to try, we speak to
women who have taken the plunge...

BOXERCISE

Based on the training boxers use
to keep fit, a typical class involves
shadow boxing, skipping, hitting
pads, kicking punch bags, pressups, shuttle runs and sit-ups. As
there's no scary opponent, it's a
fun, challenging and safe workout.

arms, abs and back, so you'll punch
your way to a toned torso and the
stamina of a top athlete.

SPINNING

CALORIE COUNT You can
burn up to 600 calories an hour.*
'I TRIED IT' Sylvia, 64, says: 'I
was hooked from the start.
Boxercise is more intense than
some gym classes and you're on
your toes all the time, so you get
an all-over workout.
'It's great for toning up the legs
and bum, too, as correcting your
stance is vital for getting your
punching technique right.'

BENEFITS It's all too easy to just sit on an exercise bike and tootle along at
your own pace, but to reap the rewards, you really need to push those pedals.
In a spinning (or spin) class you'll cycle 'uphill' in fast spurts to racy music.
You'll have classmates to thank for your toned legs and bum, as being in a
group means you're less likely to slack off.

'I TRIED IT' Lucy, 58, says: 'I've been going to spin classes three or four
times a week for six years. I never get bored! They're ideal if you don't have
much time, as they usually last around 45 minutes.'
