THAT rASH? W Most babies will develop a rash of one kind at some stage – here’s the lowdown on what it could be hen your beautiful baby’s skin, which is normally so soft, smooth and silky, is marred by an angry red rash, it can be scary for you and very uncomfortable for your little one. But nine times out of 10, rashes are part and parcel of being a baby and with the right treatment and care you can make it better and ease his symptoms. What is face off Nappy chappy TreaT Them righT Don’t do anything – your newborn’s skin is so sensitive that all you need to do is use warm water a couple of times a day to wash his skin and keep it clean. The spots will not bother him and will clear up on their own. 082 | july 2011 TreaT Them righT make sure you change your baby’s nappy as soon as he’s done a wee or poo. clean his bottom with warm water and a mild soap and pat it dry or use alcohol and fragrance-free wipes. give him half an hour or so nappy-free time at least twice a day so the air gets to his skin. apply a thin layer of barrier cream after every change. at the end of the day, give him a warm bath and pat his bottom dry. it should clear up within three or four days. if the rash is a yeast, or bacterial infection, then talk to your health visitor or gp and get it treated. words: georgina maric | PhotograPhs: getty images After the birth of your little one you expect them to be absolutely perfect. However, coming straight from your warm and watery womb to the harsh outside world can play havoc with a baby’s skin. The most common newborn rash is milia, also known as milk spots. Tiny, white spots appear, usually across the nose, cheeks, chin, forehead or around the eyes. The spots look raised, but if you touch them they will feel smooth. They normally appear a couple of weeks after the birth because the oil glands on the face are still developing. Your baby’s milia spots should clear up on their own within a month or six If You’rE WorrIEd weeks. Some babies have a few red ABouT Your BABY’S spots, too, which also clear by comPlExIoN or If about six weeks. Just like teenage mIlIA (mIlk SPoTS) spots in adolescence, hormones HASN’T clEArEd are the cause but not your baby’s AfTEr THrEE moNTHS, – this time it’s your hormones, SEE Your GP which are still circulating in your baby’s system, that cause the spots. Nappy rash is an inevitable part of babyhood and is caused by contact with the wetness from the wee and poo in a nappy. Even the most absorbent nappy leaves some moisture on a baby’s delicate new skin and this then makes it harder for your baby’s skin to work as a barrier, making it more likely his skin will become irritated. This rash happens if the nappy is not changed often enough or your baby has particularly sensitive skin. Skin that has been in close contact with the nappy will look red and inflamed, usually around the genital area, the outer skin on the folds of his thighs, and the bottom. It can appear either dry or moist and may sometimes look shiny or pimply. If it’s not treated it can develop into something more serious like a yeast infection, such as thrush or candida, though this is more common in babies on antibiotics because these drugs kill the good bacteria that normally keep yeast in check. Thrush begins as tiny red spots, which spread until they form a solid red blotch. Nappy rash can also be caused by a bacterial infection. If this is the case, your baby may have a fever, and the infection usually causes oozing yellow patches or pusfilled pimples. If so, arrange a visit to your GP.
